Bardiness

"..a bardy view!"

Monkey Business

A disenchanted primate in Thailand, apparently quite peeved at being forced to climb trees to pick coconuts, finally snapped, and in a fit of rage hurled a nut at it's abusive owner and killed him.

It's claimed that the cheeky monkey found the work boring, strenuous and unrewarding. His owner earned a mere 4p for every coconut picked. He never shared any of it, and paid his worker in bananas.Macaque-crop1

The monkey, who was named as Brother Kwan, was purchased for £130.

No wonder he was fed up. He would have to collect 3,250 nuts before there was a return on the investment. Presuming he retrieved six from each tree that means he would have to climb up 540 palms. As they are each about 150ft high, it's not surprising he lost his temper.

There are about 1,200 pig-tailed macaques employed as coconut pickers in Thailand, and some are able to pick 300 a day. Ten times more than a man.

Unfortunately they don't have any union representation. They did have a shop steward once, but he remarked that he was flogging a dead horse and quit.

"I'd rather be in a zoo!" he was reported as saying before he leaped off into the jungle!

"There's no bleeding workers rights in this bloody country" he berated whilst swinging through the trees.

It's not clear what happened to Brother Kwan. I doubt he could afford a lawyer even if one was available. There were rumours he could up end up in a kangaroo court. How confusing!

It reminds me of the Hartlepool monkey which was hung for being a French spy during the Napoleonic Wars. Hartlepoolmonkey

A French ship capsized off the coast and the only survivor which made it ashore was an odd creature dressed in military uniform.

It was the ships mascot, but the local people, never having seen a Frenchman before (nor a monkey for that matter), and fearing invasion, assumed the poor thing was part of the invasion fleet.

They held a trial, interrogated it – unsuccessfully – and sentenced it to death. Then they hung it on the beach!

I don't make this stuff up you know!
