Bardiness

"..a bardy view!"

Irritable Bowel Syndrome….

Just like humans the earth suffers indigestion, and just like us she burps. Judging by the destructive number of earthquakes of late, something disagreeable is surely causing acute bowel movement.

Seismologically the world is in a constant state of flux. The ground below us is ever moving, and most of us barely notice it.

To give an indication I was looking at that most eminent website belonging to Philvocs. They monitor and predict (when possible) activity, including volcanoes.

This month alone there have been four earthquakes in the Philippines ranging from 3.7 to 4.7 magnitude. Only yesterday a 4.7 quake occurred 2Km below ground on the Manila Trench west of Lingayen north of the Capital.

Philvocs gives the time (05.29), the location (16.34deg N – 119.34 E) the depth (002km – shallow),origin (tectonic) and magnitude (4.7)

In addition they give Expected Damage – None. Expected Aftershocks – none.  And state that no further bulletin will be added unless more information becomes available.

Last month there were 26 observations throughout the Philippines, ranging from 2.4 to 6.1 magnitude at depths between 2 and 80 km.

Unfortunately when plates collide under heavily populated areas death and destruction follows. If they occur under the sea then tsunamis will be the result.

You don't have to be a genius to realise that earthquakes are being more destructive because of an ever increasing population – compounded by cheaply constructed buildings, and inhabited by those that have the least.

The Earth hasn't changed – she is doing what she has always done – unfortunately it is we, her custodians, the fleeting visitors who must change our ways.

As Carl Sagan once said – this is the only home we've got. I would add that If we want to live here securely, then we should build decent homes for everyone.
