Bardiness

"..a bardy view!"

Spoof Time Magazine Covers fool the Philippines twice in three weeks!

Spoof-pnoy-time-magazine-cover-inquirer-newsRecently the Philippines Daily Inquirer fell foul of a hoax "Time" magazine cover naming President Aquino as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

They duly tucked their tail between their legs and apologised for being duped.

Yesterday that didn't prevent a plethora of journalists, bloggers, and correspondents failing to learn the same lesson and were duped by a another fake "Time" magazine cover stating that the Philippines was the "most stupid country for electing a 20-year old as a Senator" in the recent mid-term elections.

The fact that it originated from SWN: "So What's News" – a website which clearly proclaims that it is "a Satirical and Fictional news website" whose mission statement visibly states that it "injects humour into everyday news to provide respite to readers who have grown weary with mainstream news organization's partisan, biased and depressing way of presenting the news" phased them not.

Worse, thousands of comments on facebook and other forums are ignorantly fueling the spoof.

For some reason people believed this story, and because it looked genuine nobody bothered to check out the facts, or even go to the official "Time" website to see the front page of their latest issue. There's many embarrassed faces today.

Yet it clearly demonstrates the ease which misinformation can be galvanised to create dissent and uninformed opinion.

Perhaps it proved a point. It proved that maybe the Philippines is the most stupid country because her most vocal educated citizens actually fell for the scam and exposed themselves as being stupid. Now that is the ultimate irony! A clear case of the tail wagging the dog.

Furthermore, it's time they learned that the news is not on social network sites – that they need to be more selective, investigative and discerning in order to establish the truth.
